When your tooth suffers from a traumatic injury or has a cavity, we may recommend a filling. Here at the Office of Kimberly A. Suter, DDS, PC, we specialize in silver amalgam and composite fillings.

Fillings are often recommended to repair:

  • Cracked teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • Cavities
  • Worn down teeth
  • Tooth decay

Composite Fillings

These fillings are a mixture of multiple components and can be placed in the tooth to fill any cavities or cracks along a tooth’s surface. Composite fillings are also used to help recolor discolored teeth or add shape back to teeth that are chipped. Because these fillings have a range of color shades to choose from, they are capable of repairing both back and front teeth.

We apply composite fillings in small layers to maximize effectiveness, and then, between each layer, we use a precise UV light to quickly cure the composite. As it cures, the composite is permanently set into place and shaped by the dentist to provide a better fit and feel in your mouth. After the composite filling finalizes with another round of UV light, we clean up the area by polishing the composite to prevent staining and extend its lifetime.

Silver Amalgam Fillings

We call these types of fillings “silver fillings” because of their silvery coloring, but they are made up of a combination of metals. Silver amalgam fillings are made from liquid elemental mercury and a powdered alloy consisting of silver, copper, and tin. Just like other types of fillings, they can be placed in the tooth to fill any cavities or cracks along a tooth’s surface. Silver amalgam fillings are stronger than many other types of fillings, and are made to last a lifetime with proper care. Additionally, silver amalgam fillings are one of the least expensive types of fillings used by dentists today.
